Okay, I'll try to do some translating here... Frank said (or rather typed) "I'm sure you will do very well", which doesn't make much sense if you understand it literally, because how can you be *sure* he will do very well? You might *hope* he will do well, or you might have the impression that he is a bright guy, and you might therefore think that he will *probably* do very well. But you cannot really be sure. Bowmann's reply is therefore entirely logical, and if you understand it literally, it's nothing more than a logical reply.
Unfortunately, most people don't use language that way. They use something you might call "social language", which is quite complex and can be quite annoying and frustrating for those of us who understand language literally and don't automatically understand the rules of "social language". People who use "social language" (i.e. most people) often don't say what they mean and don't mean what they say. Amazingly enough, other people who also use "social language" usually understand what they mean instead of what they say. I believe a translation of "I'm sure you will do very well" from social to literal language would be something like "I want to show you that I believe in you, because that might help you to do well." If Bowmann's reply is read as if it were "social language" (which it probably wasn't), I guess the "translation" might be something like "I don't believe in him" or "I don't wish him well". That explains why people reacted negatively to it.
Sheesh. It would be so much easier if people just said what they mean. But most people learn "social language" right from the beginning and are not even aware that there's a difference. Sigh... Anyway, I wish Alan all the best for the exams! 🙂
