To Angie:
This topic has been discussed before, and I still have no real answer to give you. Calling someone a Jewish man is just like calling someone a Christian. But calling someone "a Jew", is demeaning. There is something about ...[text shortened]... beings. I guess it is similar to calling a black man "a nigger".
Thanks for explaining. I had never heard that some Jewish people don't like to be called "Jews". There are also Jewish websites where the word "Jew" is used, so clearly not all Jewish people have a problem with that word. Now that I know that you find it demeaning, I won't use it. You should not expect everyone to know this, though.

I have heard many somewhat similar discussions about the use of "autistic person" or "person with autism". While "person with autism" is what's considered PC, most autistic people I know prefer "autistic person", some of them so much so that they will be insulted if you use "person with autism". Others will be insulted if you say "autistic person", or even worse (in their eyes), "autist". I find the whole discussion somewhat ridiculous. If I know what a person prefers, I will use that, but if they haven't told me, there's no way of knowing.

I have looked on dictionary.com to shed light on this and left none the wiser. It gives a definition of the word 'jew' as a person of hebrew decent, then it has another entry referreing to the word as offensive. Maybe it all depends on what context the word is used in, or perhaps it is only permittable for Jewish people to use it.

Someone should bang their heads together but that would be like banging two pieces of enriched plutonium together. BOOM.

This thread has developed into a bit of a pissing contest and as far as I can recall its about Katty leaving because of exactly the bitchiness that is going on in here.

All I can say is that I will miss you Kat and you humour.

And to all you other little children that insist on argueing and name calling... shame on you.
Aint there enough trouble in this world without bringing it to the chess board.

I feel the need to ask this question now, as there are probably loads of other non-native speakers who are wondering:
Why is the word "Jew" considered derogatory? I dunno, it might be a difference in grammar, as in German it would be the perfectly normal (non-discriminating) term to use.
I mean, I was wondering if it was just the fact that it's a very g ...[text shortened]... the term "Christians"?
Please explain?

PS: And please stop flaming freddie-what did he do?
If Skeeter say's "Jew" it is a forum ban or post's deleted.

If Feivel say "Nazi" it is a forum ban or post's deleted.

It is what is implied when said words are used to describe "others".

While many autistic people also are artistic, I have never heard anyone talk about "people with artism".
