in chess puzzles does black go up or down

The "find the best move" puzzles on shredder always has you playing up the board for whichever color you are finding the best move for, so in other words you always play "up", but it can be either as black or white, depending on the puzzle.

I assumed to OP meant puzzles in either newspapers or books. I didn't consider software programmes.
