The Japanese surrendered after the nuclear holocausts unleashed upon them in August 1945. A few days later, with the Japanese occupiers in disarray, and with a significant number having been armed by the Japanese, the Indonesians declared independence even as the British and the Dutch manoeuvred to restore colonial rule. Best wishes to all the Indonesians who are celebrating today, i.e. virtually all of them... although there are a tiny handful, mostly in the east of the country, who still draw a military pension from the Netherlands, after fighting for their colonial masters against Jakarta's republican hegemony.

Actually the weapon that devastated Japan was the development of the proximity fuse. That increased our accuracy of shells fired to down a plane 10x. This is why Japan resorted to kamikaze attacks etc. Tokyo was already a bombed out mess, they were defeated but refused to surrender. The US had a planned invasion of Japan and expected heavy casualties. So we nuked them, which was horrific and terrible, but we did it again. Dang,
Don't forget the American citizens of Japanese ancestry that were held in concentration camps during the war. Or what we did to Natives, etc

We can, nevertheless, wish them well on the 78th anniversary of their Independence Day.
