I'm curious about what Russ does besides take care of this site? Is this is an actual job and he makes money from it or does he have a real job and this is just a hobby?
I think what he is doing is great but I have to question what his original intention was when he first started.
Having an interest in chess wouldn't one want to improve even if it is just a little bit? I thought he might have started this site to meet some people and play games and improve his chess but since it's so popular he doesn't have time for "Chess" and is busy just keeping this site running and possibly working a real job?

Not that Russ makes important money out of the site, but I still think it's something more than a side-job.
Let's guess that only 1'000 users (out of 13'000 rated ones) pay the subscription as it is now.
It makes about 30'000$ per year.
Take away 10'000$ per server maintenance or sudden change due to malfunctions and the remaining is 20'000
And I mantained low.
Not the average side job, and it's totally right that Russ and Chris make a little living out of the site, considering the huge amount of time and effort to create some entertainment for us chess geeks🙂
