Doyle was born in Edinburgh.

Bobby Thomson was born in Glasgow.

Yes, he invented tarmac.

Almost everything we use or hold dear was invented by a Scot.

Unless you're just buzzing for a fight, in which case you deserve a worse title than that, but i don't blanket insult a country the way some people do.

James I, or James VI as we like to call him:

1. Designed the Union Jack

2. Commissioned the Kng James Bible.

3. Was compared to Solomon by no less of an authority than Francis Bacon.

Slightly disappointed that you didn't answer my question (I can only assume that a 'Nigel' is someone from England?)... however, a 'Jock' (as you're well aware) is simply someone from Scotland... a 'Mick\Paddy' is someone from Ireland...
a 'Taff' is from Wales...
a 'Paki' is from Pakistan...
a 'Frog' is from France...
a 'Kraut' is from Germany...

From my point of view, none of these names are meant in a derogatory way... I get called a 'Brit' and don't take offence.
You're right, they are blanket terms, but certainly not intended to insult anyone.
Unfortunately the likes of the BNP have hijacked many of these terms (like they stole the Union flag), and so people that still use these terms get labelled as a racist or worse... which I am not!

I do believe that some people are far too sensitive about things like this, I can see nothing wrong in calling a spade a spade - and as I'm happy to dish it out, I'm also more than happy to receive it back...

Not looking for a fight especially, just putting my views across...

On the contrary, these terms are indeed derogatory, and all of the ones you mentioned were english terms for other nationalities. As for the term "Brit", that is not a name for the English where i come from, where i come from they are called "Sassanach", or "Poofs" when they refer to us as Jocks, but as i said i prefer not to blanket insult, so tend to drop the 's' when discussing such matters.

The idea that the term "paddy", or "Frog" is not derogatory is actually quite laughable, and you obviously do not know what you are talking about, but i will accept that this is a miscalculation on your part.

Just so you know, other terms that are not terms of indearment are...

Spick
wop
paki
yid
nigger
and . . .spade for that matter.

Just thought you'd like to know.

Oh HH, you are so predictable in your opinions on topics with a P.C. touch. I could guess at them and write your posts for you. 😕

You live in your fantasy world, i'll live in mine.

I however, know that if i went around Dublin here calling everyone Paddy, that it would not take long for my point to be proved right, same if you wenty round my country calling everyone Jock, or around Cardiff say'ng "Hey Taffy".
Just because you live in a fantasy world, don't make it so.

oh yeah, i don't particularly care much for the subject, i was just speaking fact. If some guy takes offence at being called Nigel, then says "but what i said wasn't bad", then i have a right to reply. . .that's life.

Just thought you'd like to know.
Your comment about not knowing what I'm talking about reeks of the playground... you don't have a clue who I am.

Any words, are just exactly that... words.

It's how people choose to interpret them that makes them offensive. Do you think I'd be offended at being called a Sassenach? No... I realise that it is just a word...

Grow up.

When exactly did I say that I was offended at being called a 'Nigel'?
I asked what one was... that surely shows that my mind is open?

Well now you know that it is taken as an insult, it is up to you how you proceed from now on. In the future i will take it for granted that you are trying to insult me because you have been informed and chose not to listen.
Why would you prefer to defend the use of the word rather than just deal with it, and move on ?

Like i said, i'm not much bothered myself, but your insistence fascinates me.

The more I read these forums, the more I am shocked that people in other parts of the world seem to be so far behind the US in matters of race relations.

It stuns me, before joining this site I would have thought just the opposite.

Your hipocritical comments are quite funny...

I will always defend words, any words.... they're part of our language, so why shouldn't we use them?

Sadly the governments and the so called 'watchdogs' are all too eager to jump all over certain word usage for fear of causing offence...
We are adults and should be able to deal with stuff in an adult manner... when I use certain terms, they're not meant to be insulting. I've got Irish mates that I call Paddy, and Scottish mates that I call Jock... I've also got Asian mates that I call Paki and Abdul - and it's remarkable (according to you!), but none of them take offence!!
Maybe that's 'cos they know me, and know I mean nothing by it?

I will concede that when certain words are in print form they can take on a different meaning...

Enough said on the matter as far as I'm concerned.

Please don't tell me you're holding up America as a role model for the World?
