Folks,

Do you have an interesting/unusual chess set, or a chess set with a story behind it?

Mine is a stone replica of the Lewis chess men that my parents got me for my 30th last year and brought over to the US on their last visit.

You can see it at http://www.rosechess.co.uk/lewis.html (I'm in no way connected to their site but its simpler than uploading a photo of the chess set).

The only problem with it is that sometimes my wife confuses the king and queen (they're very similar from behind) and makes what seem like the most bizarre moves until I realize what she's done (and let her take the move back).

Its a far cry from the plastic Waddingtons set I learnt on as a 7 year old!

Regards,

Paul.

They have the Lewis one in the SAC collection.
I must get a decent one someday...

I recieved an Egyptian set for my 18th. The king and queen have egyptian style garbs , the knight is that skinny egyptian breed of cat, etc.

It's definitely nice to use, but the strange looking pieces would make a serious game impossible. Also your wife would hate it chewie, it takes a bit of work to tell the royals apart.

I won once at a tourney a chesboard with 3 players! This kinda chessboard has been discussed in another thread.

And for my birthday I received a Lord of the Rings Chessboard with pieces that are made of something between marble and wood and a board with the map of Middle-Earth printed on it! Very beautiful!

I have a rather inexpensive set, very standard heavy plastic, that cost less than $15 in Canada at the time.........what's unusual is that I bought it during the Fischer-Spassky series played in Reykjavik, 1972, when interest in the game was swelling. I still have all the pieces 31 years later and the board as well (although it's worn, so I use them on a chess board and table I built)
