Chess is certainly a game, and chess is certainly a competition, but I don't think chess is an athletic sport. It all depends upon the definition of the word sport. I think any competition where one's performance would not be hampered by a sprained ankle or a sprained wrist, then that competition would not be a sport. A sprained ankle or sprained wrist would definitely adversely affect the performance of a football player, baseball player, wheelchair basketball player, gymnast, bowler, draughts player, billiards player, curler, archer, ballroom dancing etc. I do not place chess in that category of sport.

That being said, chess not being a sport does not place it on a lower pedastel as a competition. There are many serious competitions that rival sports for intensity and drama. Just for purposes of discussion, let's give a go at rating the top competitions.

Top Professional Competitions:
1. Nathan's Hot Dog Eating
2. Chess
3. Poker

No -- it fails to pass the definition of a sport because it requires no physical exertion.

It's just not an athletic sport.

Check your dictionary, and don't let anyone ignore all the definitions picking the one they like most.

Also, NY times has great chess puzzles and games in the sports section.

ESPN2 has had chess championships.

It wasn't but a few days ago that I was flipping through my TVs on-screen program guide looking for something to watch (looking for something to watch, there's an interesting phrase) when I came upon a listing for bowling on ESPN2 -- four 30-minute segments of a women's bowling event making a 2-hour block -- so being a 10-pin kegling fan, I happily turned to the show. Instead of seeing bowling, however, I found myself watching a NASCAR race, and I can't remember for sure, but I think it was a repeat of an earlier run of a NASCAR race. I checked the listing again; it definitely said bowling, but NASCAR was being featured.

ESPN2 Programming Director: "Look fellas, I know we contracted to show bowling tonight, but I just can't. I just can't!"

ESPN also has the National Spelling Bee, but no one would confuse that with sport. It's a competition, but not a sport.
