Chess is certainly a game, and chess is certainly a competition, but I don't think chess is an athletic sport. It all depends upon the definition of the word sport. I think any competition where one's performance would not be hampered by a sprained ankle or a sprained wrist, then that competition would not be a sport. It's just not an athletic sport.
Check your dictionary, and don't let anyone ignore all the definitions picking the one they like most.
Also, NY times has great chess puzzles and games in the sports section.
