As I am sure some of you have noticed, I haven't been very active in the forums lately (that is to say, not very active compared to my usual activity). This has been for a reason, and I am beggining to wonder if it is the forums that are different or just me.
As of late , I have been perceiving a lot of comment directed at individuals to be worded rather rudely. I have seen a fair bit of name calling and heavy handed criticism of others views. This has been my perception. Once or twice I have posted concerning that the wording of the comments were rather strong and (in my opinion) just plain negative with undue disrespect. However.....I find myself being alone in this.
I am wondering as of late if this is just my interpretation of it all, and not in fact the intended meaning. Have I been taking a joke literally? Has the meaning of posts become obscured for me? Am I becoming so thin skinned that I cannot discern jest from malice? I don't know anymore.
Someone please enlighten me. I miss the forums, but lately I feel like I can't tell my head from my arse (or for that matter, if I am being an arse).
Best Regards,
Omnislash

My 2 pence....
Everything goes through cycles, especially the general forum. From my observations I would argue that firstly, you have 3 main groups of people posting, those who have been here a long time (and this includes people obviously people who have been here all the time) and those who are new but want to be part of the established group, and lastly those who just pop by now and then, see something they like or dislike and feel motivated enough to make a comment.
The older posters (which is where I would hope to sit), tend to know each other, are aware of the general forum etiquette, understand each others humour (or lack of it). The older posters tend to view the forums, particually the general forum as an integral part of the RHP community, it is where they meet, discuss, and keep up to date with their friends on the site. Generally, this group tend to feel resentful or threatended by our second group.
The newer posters, tend to feel a bit theatened by the older established posters as they lack knowledge of the forums unique etiquette, they are unknown by those who are more likely to reply, and they are more likely to interpret humour as an aggressive thing. There are many people that are now viewed as friendly regular posters who in the past may have been seen as agressive argumentative new kids on the block. Once people get used to them, and thier behaviour is interpreted into the general day to life of the forum they move into the established group. The biggest example of this currently would be how the forums now have a strong nucleus of younger posters who are seen as part of the forum.
Why do some people not enter the established forum community? Either they give up, get bored, move on; or in the case of some notable names their behaviour is never found to be acceptable.
So given this, I tend to think as a group of newer poster come along things tend to get more argumentative as we learn to get on with each other, then we have a relative calm, then it starts again.
If you think the forums are bad now look back in the froum history to late 2001 / early 2002, then you will understand why I never posted here for about 5 months of regular play at RHP. It was all out slagging post after post after post.

The distinction could be made from those who are pawn stars and those who are not (however there are those within this, those who cant be bothered to pay the money to join, and those who don’t feel they are good enough to be a pawn star, usually recent members or people like me who haven’t won for a while).
Pawn stars are more likely to know each other better than those who are not, I usually only play against people I know in the real world not, those I don’t know, on the web, I may have to branch out and play some new people but I feel I may be outclassed.
Guess that makes me one of the second group then.Though I don't feel threatened by group 1 nor group 2.And I certainly don't want to threaten anybody else.Am I trying to fit in?I guess so,although it's not really something I pursue,in time,it just happens.Every day I check the forums, when I see something that's intresting, funny, weird or a cry for help,I give my view, make a comment or try to help out.I think I post quite a lot,and I would even post more,if it wasn't for my bad English.Often I see an intresting thread and I would like to enter the debate, but cannot 'cause I can't express my thoughts.I also post a lot of rubbish, that's just me,trying to be funny.Though I admit I have a sick sense of humor.I can't say that I've seen any malicious, out of line personal attacks here. With the possible exception of some posts regarding Miss Hope, but that's her brothers work. And even those were pretty civil,at least,I thought they were.To me,it all seems quite harmless, good fun.And that's how it should be!
Let this post be a statement for every 'second grouper' who means no harm, has no malicious intent and just wants to have fun playing chess over here.

It was only a rather general view on my part anyway.

To get around to Omnislash's original question, I think I have a different take. Not having noticed, since I came here in November 2002, much overt nastiness (tuco and Toker being notable exceptions), I tend to watch the forums more in terms of general interest of discussion, which I think has been rather high at the moment. But I also agree with Andrew's breakdown.
NB I recall my first odious post in the general forum was a nasty fig-hunt, which latex bishop called me on!

No one likes a fig hunt, especially when you had so much more to offer us all π
