For Fungi to grow they must be living in some way. A dead fungi will lose moisture and shrivel up before being broken down into compost.

Perhaps Im wrong, but I dont think fungi are technically considered to be alive.

Fungi are classified as one of the Taxonomic Kingdoms. Each of these is made of of different organisms, all of which will be 'living' at some point in their biological cycle.

Fungi also exhibit the 5 signs of life - I can't remember what they are but you can probably find them on wiki.
