I'd say the 60-70s were defenitely the best era! Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Who, The Velvet Undergournd, The Rolling Stones, Dylan....... No other era competes.

I'd say that there is just as much good music out there today as there was any othertime. It's just that commercial radios/tv and record companies ram shit down our throats ...[text shortened]... nd i will guarantee you will love at least one. Ecxept for country. Not a fan of country at all.
I've been discovering alternative hip-hop of the likes of Prefuse 73, Madvillain and RJD2. What sayeth thee?

You must be on drugs.

The 60's and 70's are considered the pioneering decades for modern music. In particular, The Beatles, Led, The Who, Dylan, The Stones and The Beach Boys (who are never given the critical credit they deserve) formed modern music.

Music has not declined since this period. It's the crap the media stuffs down your throat that has declined. I can't believe the number of people who think that what they hear on radio and see on T.V. is representative of what is out there. The recording industry is in a real crisis, and most don't even know it.

Some late night thoughts (possibly incoherent):

The problem is that music as an art has evolved tremendously and what the layman cannot truly appreciate is not being covered by the media. Music is beginning to be an art in a more evolved but unfortunately more elitist sense.

Painting, sculpture, literature, etc are all arts that have no mass appeal since the majority of the people have to be really interested in the subject to fully appreciate some masterpieces. Music is finally becoming that way, and perhaps so is cinema.

Yep all very good! Check out Mos Def (more so his new cd, a new hope), Looptroop, Dj Shadow was doing some good alternative Hip Hop, Outkast (Of course) and may i say The Roots are by far one of the most talented hip hop bands i have ever heard or seen. Their live show is second to none and they have tapped inot a unique alternative Hip Hop sound. They are a live 7 piece band. Madvillan is cool, i assume youve got Madlib's and MF Dooms stuff as well, if not check em out because mad lib has done heaps of other projects like Jaylib, and he did a Blues Special on Blue Note where he remixed a heap of Jazz songs from the Blue Note lable. MF Doom is everywhere, he was actually the MC for the KLF back in the early 90's. Umm Roots Manuva is incredible and is fairly alternative (British Dub/Raggea/Alt Hip Hop), Edan, Fdel, Curse Ov Dialect.... So many....

Back on topic...

I don't think music is declining as such, it's just gone for a vacation. We still have gems to remember it by, but we can always be assured that it'll be back.

That said, I don't think the new found "hip hop and rap" music is any good. Alternative rock is alot better nowadays as well; Gorillaz and Daft Punk have some great, unrecognized stuff.

Every decade has had it's good bits and bad bits.
Some records are just plain awful, and there are always a few of those knocking about.
Most perceptions of music quality are purely subjective.
Personally I think music is having quite a good time at the moment.
There are many fine British acts at the moment, and the US is finally starting to leave the 70's behind.
French music is at its best ever, and as soon as the Germans realize what a jerk David Hasselhoff really is, they'll pull their music up by its bootstraps too.

"the 60s and 70s was the greatest era for music", then you name 5 or 6 bands from said era. well, you could pick 5 or 6 decent bands from the 80s and 90s-AC/DC, guns n' roses, queen, iron maiden, the darkness, nirvana. music has not so much declined as changed. if a band like led zepplin was to emerge nowadays they would be critisised for being "a led zepplin rip off". people are meerly looking back with rose-tinted specs.

Thanks for the info.

Personally, I'm not into The Roots or Outkast at all. I prefer the things that are clearly away from the traditional genre. Shadow and Prefuse take the lead. Madlib is also great and Edan, Roots Manuva and MF Doom are good but also are not that far from the traditional genre.

I don't know about Fdel, Looptroop or Curse Ov Dialect. Will check them out.

What genre would you call four tet and what can you recommend in that area? (If you're bored, just say so🙂)

Dj Shadow is the man, Prefuse 73 is good, I have one album but struggle to listen to it.

Similar but different, check out Buck65 - he is great!

Fourtet is good also, the video to 'As serious as your life gets' is fantastic - great use of Morris Dancing footage. For similar, check out Aim (on grandcentral records) - his first album 'Cold Water Music' is awesome (Suggest you listen to Demonique when alone on a dark stormy winters night with just candles lit for best effect)

Which album do you have?

Try the "Extinguished: Outtakes" from Prefuse 73, it's perhaps my favourite and the easier to get into also (which doesn't mean it's less quality in this case).

I'll definitely check out Aim and Buck65. Never heard of them but if you say it's similar I'm interested.

fortunately for those of us who play and listen to folk music, it is
also evolving, more people approaching virtuoso status like
Martin Simpson, Rory Block, Eliza Gilkenson, Mark Simos,
John McCutcheon, people you have no doubt never heard of and
never will. There will always be folk artists around and some of the
best music in the world is by these people and there always will be
a small percentage of the population who admires them.
