Not much to talk about the quality of music you listen to these days. From Soul in the 60's to the disco era of the 70's, R&B in the 80's and hip hop in the 90's, the quality of music has declined steadily. I think the 80's produced the best music of all time.
We had Luther Vandross (bless his soul), Prince (bless his new name), Michael Jackson (bless his weakness for children), Chic (le freak), Cameo (where is Larry Blackmon?), Culture Club (where is Boy George?), Gap Band (Oops upside your head!), Midnight Star (no parking on the planet), Evelyn King(Champagne), Donna Summer (great chess player), Kurtis Blow (the breaks), Skyy, Dazz Band, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder (8th wonder), Commodores, Lakeside(fantastic voyage), Sister Sledge etc.
Some of the hit singles today are copyrights of 80's music.

And some of the hit singles of the 80s were copies of songs from the 60s...
There will always be good music. There will always be bad music. And personally I suspect there will always be a lot more bad music than good music.
There IS an argument for simply saying there is less music, at least what's commercially available from the record companies. Someone did some research here in Australia, which attributed the drop in CD sales to a drop in CD *releases*, rather than internet piracy. Needless to say, the record companies weren't impressed with this story and tried to hose it down.
EDIT: I don't think it's terribly smart to try and label Aretha Franklin as an artist from the 80s!

But unfortunately, due to the 'Pop-revival' all those 80's songs are being covered and re-released by all the crappy groups out today π
Oh. No. Not the politics either.

The best band of the eighties has not been mentioned, so I must give a nod to New Order.
I agree that the majority of the music in this era is poor, but I believe that the bulk of good quality music was produced during the 1960's&1970's. It's a rough generalisation, but I think most will agree, it is also an accurate one.
When Pink Floyd (70's) and The Who (60's) are easily the most entertaining acts to a lot of young people during Live8, it's easy to see how poor the music of today is, and why people will look to the 80's with misguided nostalgia. I mean, most people would look back to the frying pan with good memories after falling into the fire...
