Recently, I believe, he's got incredibly frustrated by the state of the boards, which he considers is driving people away. The boards have always been a major selling point of RHP.

After 2 years as a subscriber I recently cancelled and forum content had nothing to do with that decision.

Its that crucial point so many of you seem to be missing. There's no such thing as fair or not fair here; you have the choice to pay a subscription and receive extras, or register for free and have limited access and the site owners decide what they consider acceptable or not.
