Don't feel bad about that Russ, I lost to an 8 year old in a tournament last year. I made his slightly older sister pay the next round though.

I lost to a 9yo in a club match against a schools team about 6 months ago. i think the only thing that saved me from getting dropped was that our captain was beaten by the 9yo's 7yo brother!

Good for you, XanthosNZ that you've been beaten by an 8 year old. I believe that children are sensitive when they are mentally frustrated or lost in games like chess.

I had an 8 yr old nephew who visited us who was so enthusiastic in playing the game when he saw my chess set. He told me he knows how to play and challenge me to play. I beat him and he never ever played chess again!!!

How stupid am I to let happen to a child. I should have let him win!! I learned my lesson. "Always let a small child win the first time and encourage him to appreciate the game."

How close? I got beaten by an eight year old for my club. He was invincible! I wouldn't be surprised if he grew into a master some day. That said i'm still trying to live it down :'(
