I don't know if it is "scientists" that have been saying it, but it all stems from the fact that the Mayan calendar ENDS in 2012.
Now, anybody that has listed to Art Bell over the past decade knows that this does not necessarily mean the world ends. Some theorists proclaim that it represents the end of a current cycle and beginning of a new cycle. The ...[text shortened]... all things technological.

I believe this also has something to do with the Sun crossing the Galactic Plane, and this is what I believe the Mayans were referring to, the end of this galactic cycle (as well as the beginning of a new one), so not necessarily "the end of the world".
And not to be a grammar nazi, but I believe the phrase is "wreak havoc", not "wreck havoc".

I think you are correct on the grammar nazi issue, that's how i typed it the first time, but it just didn't "look right".
Cheers!

Scientists have been saying lately that the world will end in 2012 but i think its a lie.How will the world end if it does? Will the sun melt in to the earth or will every one starve and the population dies off & there will be noone left.

What scientists?
I had a dream a few years back I can still remember like it was last night. I was near the sea wall in my hometown looking at the stars in the sky. All the stars began to rush in one direction across the sky, and the wind really picked up. Next I was rolling on the ground, there was screaming and everything went black as I woke up.
-=The End=- (of the world?)
