Great site! I've tried a couple of items. It got "violin" after 28 questions, though it disagreed with some of my answers. It didn't think a violin had writing on it, but in my experience they tend to have at least some kind of label. It thinks that a violin is all one color, but I would include the fingerboard, which is traditionally ebony. It also thinks a violin is native to South America!

Next I tried a "bottle of beer" which it got in 29 questions, having previously guessed "a bottle of pop" and "a bottle of rum". (both times I answered "close".) Pretty impressive. It does have a few odd ideas, though:

Uncommon Knowledge about a beer bottle
Does a hockey player use it? I say Yes.
Can you talk on it? I say Probably.
Would you use it daily? I say No.
Does it have a trunk? I say Probably.

I'd say some of that was pretty "uncommon" knowledge all right!

More strangeness. This neural net clearly needs lots of teaching! It thinks a shovel cannot make a sound (wrong) but that you can make music with it! I've heard people make music with a saw, but I've never heard a shovel used as a musical instrument. I've also never heard of anyone eating a shovel!

Well, this means you have a word that is not in the OED or the set of words not in the OED. What gives?

Answer 10: No, it means I have a word that would not appear in an alphabetical list, as per your specification.

My question, ''what gives?'' is not a binary question and so does not count in the game of twenty questions as 'yes', 'no' or finite shades thereof cannot be used to represent the answer you gave.

Thus your answer to the next question is answer 10.

Just for the fun of it I tried to see if 20q could guess ufo, well it's on about it's 40th unknown question, which it does'nt count. I think a person that asked, can you see it at night, would have figured it out by now, with all the unknowns. Took it 30 questions to come up with spaceship, I'll give it the guess, because I'm tired of hitting unknown. as kids we had to be specific though.

Answer 10: No, and why is your question in quotation marks?

See, you said you had an English word. I was operating under the partial definition of 'English word' given by my question. Someone else pointed out to me that you may be thinking differently, and suggested that question; I no longer claim perfection of strategy since you've been mean to my armchair, but let's continue.

Is there some natural number n such that your word has n characters?
