Kirk,

Are you picking on me?😉

I guess that to me, proper English is a second language. Mostly, I use the "F" word for almost every word in my sentences in my daily life at work.

This isnt strictly an English question in keeping with the thead idea, however it would intrest me to know why and when "American English" started to drop letters from words such as colour.

We were just getting rid of the superfluous letters that the Europeans like to waste. We save them in a box for later.

Wasn't the simplification of English due to the majority of immigrants having difficulty spelling. So pigeon English then became institutionalised?

What do you do with them when later comes?

Actually, I have a lecture regarding the proper and creative use of profanity as there are times to use it. However one must master the basics first.

As far as I know, most of the standardis(z!)ations occurred when Daniel Webster was asked to create a dictionary. He removed the 'ugh' from borough and the u from colour, among other things...I might be talking out of my 2nd face, so those more knowledgeable than myself would do well to correct me here!

I am eagerly awaiting the next lesson, Kirk.

OK, folks, here is one of the big mistakes I hear all the time with the spoken language. Verbs that do not agree with the noun. Few things drive me crazier than this problem. Let me list some examples of what I have heard this week.

I seen him yesterday.
He had went with them.
She goed to the store with momma.
I wudn't gonna do it.

This kind of usage is a sure way to be seen as stupid. It is a killer in a job interview. Please make sure that you conjugate the verb correctly so that it agrees with the noun.

Does anyone else have some examples of poor usage?

Goddamn,

I was thinking not five minutes ago about this. Gotta keep reading now to see if there is a lesson. Semicolons 505.

In the wake of some recent threads I decided Kirk's school was deserving of a place at the top of the forum.

(Is that sentence in the clear, Kirk?)

OK, class, let's analize this sentence from a self-proclaimed genius. You must read his profile.

First of all, he did not begin his sentence with a capital letter. Secondly, he misspelled grammar. And finally, he calls me a "stupid browneye" but does not use a comma in the proper place indicating the "noun of address." I am glad he showed up so as to teach us how not to do it.

Damn, these Texans! 🙂
