Well I have a job interview next Monday for a part time managerial role, at work. It is for the same company as I work for at the moment. My main problem is that I always under sell myself at interviews and tend to bring the worst parts out about myself. I often come out of interviews kicking myself and wondering why on earth I have said what I have done.
Also, I can't be doing with open ended questions. I prefer ones that require definite answers. Ye know, ones like 'What's the capital of Hungary?'. None of this 'What are your weaknesses?' and 'Where do you see yourself in 5 year's time?' business. 'I'm sorry, I didn't realise that job description involved clairvoyancy?'. Whoops! Blown it again.
Anyway, wish me good luck, or bad luck as the case may be.

The title is telling us everything:
Job interviews: The y happen, or do they here we are in the midst of a philosophical debate on reality and perceiption.
Job interviews. having to interview scores of moronic people who neither have the qualification nor the motivation...enough to get paranoia. A deeply psycoclogical analysis on why interviewser become paranoic and schizophrenic all the time.
Job interviews: How do one if you have nobody who is qualified to do an interview. Hire an interviewer? Good idea, but how interview that person? (A classical Loose/loose/loose situation)
Jo interviews: and if your are the victim? They interview you and find out you are neither qualified nor motivated to take the job and keep the salary off you by these meager arguments...
Job interviews: how about those who want discuss your spelling mistakes.
Jimslyp I think I can begin to understand your problems.

Make a list of questions they might ask, job-related, but also possibly about your life in general (in my job interview, the one I was completely unprepared for was about what I like to do outside work). Think about what you would answer if nothing would depend on your answer, then think about what they are likely to want to hear, and then try to reconcile those two things into an answer which isn't dishonest, but also puts you in a good light. Write it down. You can also memorise the capitals of the world, just in case.

Originally posted by shavixmirActually, shav is onto it. However, rather than take the tack of interviewing them...set your self up as the prize. By that I mean you need to produce a feeling that you are the pursued rather than the pursuer. Let them know that you are considering an offer from a rival firm, but out of respect and allegience for your firm you felt it would only be fair to examine this new position and see if it could provide the necessary motivation for you to stay with them. They get blindsided and are suddenly concerned about losing one of their "locked up commodities" and you have created a shift in the process. I have been in management for years and worked up through the ranks to the Presidency. Ambition, creativeness and thinking outside the box are the things I look for.
Turn it around and interview them.
As an example...I once interviewed for a job with a new company. I explained to them the merits for my hiring and I stated my salary demands. The interviewer said I was more than qualified for the position, but he was not authorized to meet my salary demands. I asked him to get me in front of the person than was. Next thing you know, I am face to face with the President of the company. As the interviewed continued, he said he was impressed with my ability and experience, but my salary demands were well outside the range he normally hires people in this position. He offered me 75% of what I asked for. Rather than turn him down, I countered him with this.."Tell you what sir, we are obviously quite interested in each other and since we are both dealing blind since we have no history together, here is what I am willing to do. You hire me on at 50% of my salary demand. I will work for you at this level for one month to give you a better chance to observe me in your environment. If, at the end of the 30 days you are not impressed with my performance, then we agree to part company, no harm no foul. However, if I am what you are looking for, you pay me the additional 50% I was shorted for the first month and elevate me to my original salary demand, and we will make some money for this company." He got a shocked look on his face and he said no one had ever taken that approach with him before and he accepted my offer. Two weeks later he came to me and informed me that he had seen enough and he elevated my salary and paid the difference I was shorted. Six months later I was a Vice President.
It is all about confidence in yourself, in your abilities, and marketing yourself. You do that, and you take control of the process. Good luck to you.
