Knoppix kicks ass: www.knoppix.org.
haven't checked knoppix for a long time, are memory writes still denied? -there was a 'knoppix on steroids' without all the safety measures, an excellent thing to have on bootable cd if/when your os dies. what was it... penguin-something?
don't nowadays use any x's unless forced though, it's just too much hassle. (I have to program for them occasionally, but it's just pain for me...)

I am not that hopefull. After deciphering this stuff and then trying to figure out what I have got, then making any of the decisions required , I have often found something more interesting to do...
I agree with you on an over-the-Internet-type install. That would be cool.
I really think you can do the installation. Give it a whirl. If not, people here can help, or there's always the very, very helpful www.FedoraForum.org.
Originally posted by wormwoodYou're right. Knoppix is like Gnoppix with the KDE front end. They've taken the Knoppix project a long ways. As far as I know, memory writes aren't denied. The 4.02 DVD version has about anything you would need. Handy.

Originally posted by pinkthunderthanks for those extra details about the instalation. simple instructions like that would go a long way to making Linux more used.

on closer examination my linux CD set is actually fedora (linux core 1)but there is only 3 discs when the documentation on the discs themsleves calls for 6 disc.
now I am reading the instalation instruction manual with renewed interest and in the process of eliminating all the hitches one by one.
the actual instalation will probably have to wait until I am in something like a city once again. dont want to be stuck without my laptop in the "backwoods" for any length of time.
thanks also for recommending which forum to use, there being just so many. will ask a few questions there. eg. how do you boot from a USB flash drive when that boot option is not included in the boot option list.
