I have a query I'd like some advice on. I want my king to take a piece that would put it in the line of my oponent's knight. His knight could not take my King, as that would leave him in check.

The game will not allow me to take his piece, however. How do the rules of chess address this kind of situation?

You cannot move into check.

Yes it could. And then you would have no King. Playing without a King is illegal as you have lost the game.
