Raphael Mendez's La Virgen de la Macarena bathes with its
melancholy the plaza as the matador walks in, ferocious yet calm, facing his death as he faces the peak moment of his life, every Sunday. The crowd roars in awe to the gladiator's dazzling costume and how he covers almost all of his chest with the red cape, as if he is preparing himself (maybe, just maybe) to be buried hours later if taken by the bull in a deadly trance of blood and beauty -defeated by the will of God who, minutes before, did not respond his prayer.
Women love him and dream of letting themselves go in the masculine nest between his arms covered with scars; men admire his skill and bravery, and secretly envy him without the guts to face him; everybody respects him for the moment ahead... facing the miura face to face, each one of them as solitary as a walker towards the appointment with death can be, in a battle for survival.
Yes, ladies and gentleman, bullfighting season is about to start.

it's one thing to kill animals, and another one to stab and chase them until they're exhausted and weak with blood loss, then 'courageously fight' them.
mindless torture, a degenerated echo of a religion long gone.
The art and tradition involved in bullfighting is beyond some cultures
and understandings. Although I don't like the killing part, bullfighting
is an invaluable cultural expression of many societies, capable of
triggering an endless explosion of artistic expressions (painting,
music, poetry, etc.) and haunting great minds like Hemingway himself.
Those who are against it should first stop eating meat, wearing any
leather or fur, and using no medicines (which are tested on animals
endlessly before getting to the market).
Bulls for bullfighting are raised for that, specially, no extinction nor
stuff like seals or whales, which Canadians and Norwegians and
Japanese are about to extinct.
Suffering?
Yeah, so what? The passion against bullfighting should be channeled
into more productive stuff. Sincerely.
