@the-gravedigger saidThat Leonard would write a song that pointed out the depressing parts of us, and then the hope that is still left in us.
He could write a song about us but it would probably be too depressing for him.
There's this platitude that "Leonard Cohen is music to slit your wrists to". Only people who have never wanted to slit their wrists believe that. And of those, only the most smug, platitudinous people. No. Leonard saw, experienced, and wrote about, the sadness of the world and of our lives - but also about the gladness, and the hope, that lies behind it.
No. Leonard Cohen is not depressing. Leonard Cohen was himself depressed, and learned to cope with it, and taught us to cope with depression as well. Leonard Cohen did not write music to slit your wrists by. Leonard Cohen wrote music by which to decide not to slit your wrists, after all. Because there is depression, but there is also hope - and love.
After all... there may be a crack in everything, but that's where the light gets in.

@shallow-blue saidI never mentioned slitting your wrists.

But a lot of the people who did want to slit their wrists aren't around anymore to give their opinion.

Thank you. I wasn't aware that pianists were so consistent in their interpretations - pianist Lang Lang is also known to be very clear how the work should be played and it stands to reason that there may be differences in opinion, and the end result is often brilliant.
