I'll be sticking with correspondence Chess for now.
These are some of my reasons:
1. I don't use Windows/IE and suspect any flash plugin solution would be problematic for me.
2 I don't have the time to sit down and play a full live game.
3 No g'tee of your opponent finishing the game.
4 If I want a live game, I can play a 5 minute free game on ICC using xboard.
5 I play at work sometimes and fear the corporate firewall would not be sympathetic.
However that's not to say RHC-live isn't a great idea and I wish you every success.
Cheers
Laz

But for it all to work I need to invest in some fairly pricey server so ...[text shortened]... this is all a bit vague, but I would be interested in everyone’s thoughts and ideas.

I would be interested in playing live chess. I played a couple years ago on Pogo.com and enjoyed it. Of course, I love correspondence chess the most, but long for a live game. I haven't left this site since I found it. Still the greatest on the web! π
If you choose to host live chess on another site, I'll do both and never leave RHP. If you have a chat feature as a part of it, that would be great. While being a part of RHP, I have enjoyed getting to know people from all over the world. I don't think I could have done this without the help of this site. A lot of wonderful people here.
As always, well done. Keep up the good work.
Doug
I have a feeling that it would not be worth your time or money. First off, as was previously mentioned, there are already live sites one can go to and not have to pay for it. Second, most of the people on this site (at least the ones that use it the most) are here because they don't want to play live chess. I personally like the correspondence chess the best. I would like to try your setup out if you decide to go with it though. I enjoy seeing the good coding and superb graphics that you have done with RHP. Keep up the great work,
Cheshire Catπ
P.S. You need a special smiley face just for me. π
My gratitude to everyone who responded – I value all your comments. I will launch the live chess anyway as a separate entity to RHP (too much work complete already not to now).
The software I’m buying can be licensed in a number of ways – one ‘best value’ bulk purchase that costs a staggering amount of money, and some smaller stackable licenses, which if bought repeatedly are poor value, but are good for getting started - sounds like this is the obvious way to go.
I know I will not be able to take on the ‘big boys’ initially, but with time, who knows…I like a challenge. π Anyway, I’ll post in this forum when the new site is up so you can all transfer your user names. (Initially I’ll make sure everyone gets the same name they have on RHP if they want it – so if your name is gone, just let me know.)

Russ - I think I'd try it for sure. Especially on weekends, when computer access for extended amounts of time is available. I've never played live online before, I'm an RHPsnob when it comes to chess.
Its unfortunate that with the large freeware community you cant find a cheaper way to get your required software. Bravo on letting us take our names with us, I know some of us are rather attached to them (me!).
Question - Would this site be rated as well? Though separate from our RHP ratings? Would failure to complete a game mean points deducted, etc?
The concerns about computer cheaters, brought up perviously, could be an issue (Spoken as a Proud Member of the WHITE HATS Clan).
I like the idea of linked sites. RHP has a great reputation. And I'm with all who feel one of the best features here is the community.
Good Luck.
Originally posted by turtlexI will not include ratings initially, then once all the initial technical problems are solved (and I’m sure there will be many), I will introduce them.

I am well aware the best 'feature' of RHP is the community, and that is the reason I am indebted to everyone here who makes it so. (I did work for an Internet communities ‘specialist’ when I started work on RHP. Not that has helped much with the way things have developed here, but it meant I did appreciate from day 1 that we needed a good community for it all to work.)

let me know where I can find this new site - I'd be happy to use it & work out any bugs.
I liked playing at ICC but gave it up when they started asking for money because I'm a dirty cheepskate. Plus ICC eemed bery impersonal, with far too many people playing 1 minute games. If the money was going to a site I liked then it might be better, so I'd recommend linking RHP to the live site as much as possible.
The obvious problem with starting up a live chess site is that you have to have several people online at the same time (or a least 2). At the start should we organise times to meet there, and let it grow naturally from there?
Russ,
Sounds great. I'd like to play more live games, I need to work on my OTB chess. This site is great and I will stick with it also. If your live sites isn't very expensive, I'll give it a try. If you get the same interesting community of people, I might get hooked there as I am here.
I guess in general dedicated coorespondence chess players are not going to be interested in live chess. They are a different kind of animal than OTB players. So maybe a live site will attract a different group of players.
One thing I really like about RHP, is it sticks with chess. I don't enjoy sites that do strange chess variations or other games like checkers and card games. And this isn't a "chat" site. Just true chess. So if the live site is focused on strainght chess, all the better!

I don't play online chess and I am not willing to pay for it.

I think that there should be two different sites (urls) for these two projects.
but I can imagine easily that everyone on one site knows about the other: messages in the forums, statments and links shoud do their work. just say: two projects, same people.
