People understand very little about councils and what they do.

Invigorate, you live in Brighton, don't you? That is a slightly odd council.

Sometimes I do wish I lived in a council house. At least you are getting something for your money then!

I realise that a lot of council housing goes to those that really need it. Thats the way it should be.

Although there are a group of people who don't work through incapacity or laziness who get free housing and then spend all their money on cigs and booze. I'm slightly uncomfortable about paying tax to these people to give them free or subsidised housing and they are they spending money on cigs and booze. I mean that hardly makes them more employable or gets them off the sick. I know the govt should not tell you how to spend your money but it does seem odd that those who workhard and pay their taxes get least for the money they pay.

Don't read the Express then, otherwise you'll see families like this a few times a week! It disgusts me to see them in the paper getting famed up, just hope a little shame comes over them too.

I do live in Brighton. They are slightly odd. Generally council employees work hard. But government on any level is interested in maximising income. Then justifying the need to spend the money it has raised. Generally the social side of the councils work is to be applauded but their commercial side from EHO to waste management and trading standards are bureaucratic in the extreme.

Most council spending (shires, metropolitan districts...) goes on education and social services. A fairly small proportion of what they spend is raised through council tax.

No. There are some very good councils that have done a great deal for their communities.

Name one!
Most councillors are self-important local business men/women who want to stuff it up for the rest of us.
Most councils are a useless waste of space.

Where I live there are several, including Manchester (secured huge private-sector investment, completely rebuilt city centre since the 1996 IRA bomb) and Salford (whose lobbying has secured the proposed BBC move north).

Sure, there are plenty of bad councils and bad councillors (look at what happened in Lincolnshire, for example). But many people who criticise councils are largely ignorant of the work they do.
