Completely agree, never opened a chess book in my life or studied any tactics. Play and work it out for yourself, play better players and learn from them. Plus, I genuinely believe that it's 99% natural ability.
Agreed.

I'm not good at chess, just good enough to know how bad I am 🙂

I thought I was good at chess when I joined here originally, was taught how to move the pieces quite young and would beat my dad by 11/12. Then I joined here and realized there was and is a lot I don't know but it didn't take long I don't think to get to 1500. Started at around 1000/1100 if I remember correctly and went up gradually over a few months to 1500 with the old account. So I'd argue it was always there I just didn't have the opportunity to learn until I joined this site.

That’s boring, I enjoy actually playing. I watch some YouTube stuff but mostly just listen to them talk.
No Video! The tactics I am talking about you work out on the chessboard. They are tactics exercises I do on another Site. I don't think I can say the name here, but P.M. me and I will tell you the site. You will be surprised how much you will see you never saw before.

Your story reminds me of when I started at a Chess club back in 1993. My first night there I didn't win a single game, and I thought I was a decent player. I found out all I knew how to do is move the pieces. I didn't know anything about developing pieces and making a plan and having a back up plan and all the different branches (ways I move could go) in a game. It was a wake up time and I knew I had much to learn and my first year there I was most improved Player in Nova Scotia with my rating going from 1400 to 1669, as I have been reminded it has dropped since then, I have had medical issues to deal with along the way. I still enjoy the game and playing higher rated players and learning more about the game. I still have friends I made at the Chess Club from back then, although I have not been back in years. That year I went to many tournaments, and met a lot of people who are now still my friends since back in 1993, unfortunately some of them have passed.

When I started here I had a rating of…was it 1200 like every new player? Now in the intervening years I managed to hover around half that.👍 Being an avid golfer I assumed the object, like golf, was to get the lowest “score”.🤔

LOL @Stees,
You are too funny! 🙂

Yes, you were correct, everyone starts at 1200 and then you go up or down depending on how you do.
