I'm looking for some kind of software (preferable free) with which to make mix CD's. I'm wanting one which has options to cut lengths of tracks and to blend tracks to together in order to make a smoother flowing CD. Also something that doesn't eat sound quality (*mutter* stupid windows media player). Any suggestions?

Get a mp3 player.

I have one smart arse. I know of no MP3 player which allows one to create and edit a playlist as i have describe, and then burn it to CD.

Try the free version of Sony ACID. I've been able to make some decent mixes with that. It can be found here:

You can mix any song as long as you conver it to wav first. If you're worried about it not outputting to MP3 in the end, don't worry.... it does output to MP3.

Have you tried this in WMP?
Tools/Options/Rip Music/raise the audio quality with the slider. Then rip all the songs off the separate cds to WMP library at these higher quality settings, create a burn list and go.

By blend, do you mean run on after each other with no gap?
If so you can set 'crossfading' in WMP [up to about ten seconds overlap I think.]

You could also get software like nero [free trial] or others.

Edit; Actually I'm not sure if crossfading works when you burn them.

I hadn't seen that actually. I manage my MP3's with sonicstage anywho and use another program to copy whole discs. I just don't have any good comp. making stuff.

I thought that the crossfading was only for playback within WMP, i may be wrong but i would be surprised if it worked for burning CDs. Thanks though.

Yeah, I think that's right.
There are some programs that do it - can't remember offhand which - I'm sure nero platinum does but you have to pay too much for it.

Unfortunately the free version doesn't seem to include burning CDs. Is that the same for you?

No... it doesn't. But once it's in MP3, I just use a regular CD burner (Actually.... Windows Media Player has a burner with it I think) and just burn it on. It's the best work around for that. ^^;;

Does that not mean it is not split up into individual tracks? Also i can't find how to crossfade, any clues?

It seems pretty good though.
