I guess Zipdrive's answer is correct and we could deduce mass ( inertia ) by controlled braking ?
And I guess the same amount of braking would result in a different orbit as well, depending on mass ?

😀 😀 😀

the braking idea could certainly be useful, though it would cause the object to fall into a lower faster orbit - which may or may not be desirable.

they will need to use their longrange sensors since the a scanner will only detect changes in internal structure. perhaps a tractor beam could be modified to determine mass distribution too.

Hehe the Probe was not even in orbit at the time the Beagle 2 was ejected 🙂

See http://www.planetary.org/html/news/articlearchive/headlines/2003/beagle2_separation.html

And it detached safely

What 's a tractor beam ??? Are you startrekking us Prad ?

I just love it s all done by pyrotechnics ! Great Invention !

And i am catching up with events ! Given Beagle 2 was travelling at 14000mph that s great too !
😀 😀 😀

I am hoping that they will be able to establish a link. Beagle II is extremely well designed and will add a lot to our knowledge of the red beast. If we can just keep it from swallowing another probe. Anyway... here is hoping that all turns out well. The info from the orbiter will still be wonderful. No matter what.

Keep the faith... Avid Space Nut, Mike

Just for the fun of it. Another Dan Quayle quote:

"We are leaders of the world of the space program. We have been the leaders of the world of our... of the space program and we're not going to continue where we're going to go, not withstanding the Soviet Union's demise and collapse -- the former Soviet Union -- we now have independent republics which used to be called the Soviet Union. Space is the next frontier to be explored. And we're going to explore. Think of all the things we rely upon in space today: communications from... Japan, detection of potential ballistic missile attacks. Ballistic missiles are still here. Other nations do have ballistic missiles. How do you think we were able to detect some of the Scud missiles and things like that? Space, reconnaissance, weather, communications -- you name it. We use space a lot today."

-- Vice President Dan Quayle (from `What a Waste it Is to Lose One's Mind' -- the Unauthorized Autobiogra

May be my comment is out of place, but I cant resist the temptation to put this here (so please don't take offense Ivanhoe, I beg you pardon. I think with this we could initiate another thread, called ST-107)

Now:
Could the title of the book have been:

`What a Waste it Is to Lose Such Brilliant Minds' ?

Next february 1st, I'll pray for them. (and I'm not a religious bear).

Michael (aka LittleBear)

P.S.: I'm speaking about the Columbia crew, of course... :'(

I haven't the faintest idea. I don't think so. All I know is that Dan Quayle was vice-president long before the sad Colombia disaster occured ...... but sometimes I get things messed up ....

Don't worry Ivanhoe...

My intromision into the thread wasnt because Quayle was the vice-president or not at that time (I dont know it too, and I dont care)...
What called my attention was the tittle of the book, no more nor less..
That, and the matter of the main thread.

The CBS has online all the NASA reports on ST-107. It is painful to read how anyone at NASA passed the ball to his fellows... alla Pilatos.

The reports are plenty of full tech details, that in the end doesnt explain nothing.

My conclusion is that IF the Mars probe mission has failed, you'll never know, people. There are a lot of political, monetary and pseudo-professionality interests involved, that is, you'll never know the truth.

But when human lives are involved, it is not only a matter of how much in bucks was wasted...

Oh well, I'll do not extend on this theme.
As I've said, it is matter for another thread.

Cheers.
