@ponderable saidWell, except what various governments are doing now isn't safe.
@divegeester
Ever heard the saying: "rather safe than sorry"?
Right now, in the Netherlands, the majority of infections take place in the home - but that says nothing, because the virus has had to come from outside. So where do most outside infections take place?
Schools. Provably and overwhelmingly schools.
So what does the government do?
Keep the schools open, letting those little grubby-mutts run rampant all over one another and then their parents and siblings, hardly ever wearing masks - not in class, barely in the corridors, let alone anywhere outside where they stand as close to one another if not closer than inside, hormone-riddled as they are - and being jolly little super-spreaders.
Oh, and closing theatres, restaurants, and "non-essential" shops (non-essential is nice, by the way, if your tap springs a leak and it turns out that essential groceries such as cheese and beer won't fix it), all of which cause maybe about 1% of all infections, and that mostly among the anti-vax morons.
But hey, at least the children will have learned about Shakespeare. Pity that by the time they get out of school, all the theatres where they could've watched his plays will have gone bankrupt because they've been forced to close for years on end.
I'm starting to believe it is an intentional war on culture. They are right-wingers, after all, our governments, and they fear anyone able to think with his brain rather than his belly.
The post that was quoted here has been removedFar from entirely sardonic.
Note that the carnival parties in the south, also super-spreader events, were allowed to continue. Some local governments had the right idea and banned them, but our national government didn't. Meanwhile, at my chess club we're unsure whether and if so, how, we will be allowed to continue to play. For now, yes, but the uncertainty makes the competition a laughing stock.
The new variant came from Africa.
Hardly a place for social distancing and masks.
They live in crap shacks over there all huddled together.
Irrelevant because this was bound to happen.
Covid is epidemic. Like the Flu and the Cold.
Once we admit that we can go back to a normal life. (Relatively speaking)
Locking down only slows and delays the inevitable. Once you open back up it gets worse.
Don't give me that crap about the unvaccinated blah blah blah.
When they come up with a vaccine that works 100 percent and you can't get covid or spread covid after vaccination then you can blame the unvaccinated.
Close up shop? So small buisnesses fail and people are losing houses and properties because the bank is foreclosing on them due to lack of payment but big business is allowed to stay open and make huge profits.
Nothing has worked. Scientists failed.
@contenchess saidIt will eventually come to that.

But right now, this is all about preventing the health care systems being overwhelmed.
By the unvaccinated.
@ponderable saidAnd destroy the mental heath of an already fragile planet? Covid and all its variants have been around now for 2 years, 2 years, has the worlds population gone down by any significant amount? It’s time we treated it like any other disease and got on with LIVING. Can’t be living in fear forever.

@contenchess saidWrong.
Nothing has worked. Scientists failed.
Right-wing, populist politicians have failed.
Science would've ordered a vaccine mandate for everybody from the age of 3 to 120, no excuses accepted. Politics didn't have the balls.
@contenchess saidYup. And being anti-vax means you're in the bottom third. Go home and die there; stop being a burden on the rest of us.
Triage 😉
