When's the last time you experienced some simple joy (one not motivated by lust or induced by chemicals)?

Last night. We sat out on the back deck, built a fire in the fireplace, looked at the stars and enjoyed a vodka martini...yes I said "a".

The light rail today. A mother and her infant, sharing each other and oblivious to everything else. I am so glad that such joy actually exists.

Today, at a jazz concert, the Brubeck Brothers (2 of them sons of Dave Brubeck) doing Blue Rondo A La Turk followed by Take 5 followed by Unsquare Dance. A half hour of bliss.

Spontaneous conversation with total strangers, which usually begins with an incidental glance or a smile.

I had many ideas about replies, then you threw in sans lust/drugs.
    I got nothing .

Yes, that's happened more than once with homeless men. Many, I've discovered, are well educated; others have war stories to tell about Active Duty in Viet Nam or Iraq. They're as grateful for someone who will listen as for a few bucks for a meal.

How about one of your brilliant center board checkmates with a lowly pawn?

There's a certain joy in celebrating an octogenarian's birthday, especially when it's the big day for a family member or friend. Though he would have reached a different age, August 28 is the date my own father was born (my mother, September 10).
