I believe she set him up, knowing what buttons to push probably when he had some booze in him.
Why not make her first trip to the Police, or call someone right away.

She had the recorder, knows how to set him off & you are right it probably doesn't take much. He does have that drinking problem along with the bad temper a bad mix for sure. I am not saying he is an angel in this, don't get me wrong.
