Whereas if you send them a game, doesn't it give you an error message or something?

As far as I'm aware, Russ and Chris never delete any accounts from the database they just block access to them, so it makes sense that you can still send games and messages. Maybe it's something they'll fix in the future to bounce back a "they've been banned message".
