This thread has the sole intention to talk about Metallica. NOT about clan matters, other clans, challenges or OTHER Music types and/or bands.

I have created this thread for all Metallica friends, and those who have possible questions regarding this fantastic band (I'll attempt to answer them all).

Please refrain from posting any non-related topics, and if you don't like Metallica please do not disturb this thread

- Thank you -

Okay, I'll start off ...

07th June 2003

Concert in Berlin - Parkbühne Wuhlheide - approx 20,000 people

It was a great sunny afternoon, and me and my ex (Dee) spent some great days in Berlin prior to the concert. (Note, she wasn't a great Metallica fan prior to the concert, little did she know)

The Parkbühne was really beautiful, shaped like an ancient Greek arena with seatings high up the sky ... Needless to say that I took the poor girl up to the front. There was a Metal barrier after approx. 20-30 rows so we placed ourselves just before them - Sidekick band was Disturbed, not bad but not the real thing ... When Metallica finally (after way toooo many Disturbed songs) came on the crowd went ape (surprise, surprise !!) ... I took Dee out of the mosh pit and placed her strategically with some people we met whilst waiting for the gates to open ... Then I went for it ... 1 1/2 hours of non-stop moshing with the crowd in very very close proximety to the band ... I got as far as the second row !! When Nothing else matters came on, I hurried out took Dee on my shoulders and allowed her a great view towards the band (we still were really close) ... Metallica played another couple of songs and after close to 2 hours the show was over and I was in tears to have finally seen them live !!! Needless to say that the evening was followed by countless beers with some excellent drunken s*x and some extremely load (pun intended) Metallica tunes !!!

... and the memory remains ...

The very first concert I went to was a Metallica show.
It was their stop in St. Louis, MO, on their black album
tour with Suicidal Tendencies and that guy who named
his band after himself (Not Dokken, but the other one,
I can't remember the name.)

Anyway, the show kicked my pimpin' ass!

I saw them at three different shows after that.
Once in Roanoke, VA, one in Richmond, VA, on the
Load tour, and once in Boston, MA on their most
recent tour. They all kicked my ass.

The band that never dies. They push the limits and I cant immagine them ever getting stale. I have never seen them in concert, but would love to.

I friend of mine loaned me a "Ride the Lightning" tape. Played it till it broke (told him I lost it). Listened to them ever since. First time I saw them was in Phoenix in August of 1992. The Black Album tour. They were actually opening for G'N'R! Can you believe that? I still remember how stunned we were....
Metallica rocked the place. Anyone who was there to see G'N'R left a Metallica fan. Saw them again on the Load tour, but haven't wanted to see them again. I still like their early stuff better. The first three albums will live on forever....

Although I think earlier tours would've been better to catch because I don't like their newest stuff as well, they are still on my must see list. They were here not too long ago and I missed them, what a depressing day knowing they were in my town and I didn't get to go. But I will see them if it's the last thing I do!!!

How do you stand on MP3 downloads? I believe Metallica, the band, have been the most vocal of all the major acts complaining about artistic and financial theft. Do the Metallica clan support this or indeed obey their idols' wishes?

Please read the original post of mine - No Clan matters here -

Personally, I think the boys have enough money and that money is not their rationale behind their battles against Napster etc.

I think that Metallica has just some strict principles and they have showed these incredibly consistent throughout the years in sueing anyone and anything that uses their name as well...

Example

I know that a couple of years ago there was a perfum on the market called Metallica ... Needless to say that it didn't stay long !!

I personally have downloaded Metallica songs and especially demo's, concerts that aren't available on DVD, etc. and feel not bad about it. But then I know that I have spend a few good hundred £££'s on their products so am somewhere in between really.

Any views welcome, but please keep it Metallica and let this thread not drift to a general discussion about whether downloading Music should be permitted or not

Thanks
Boris

CD's are much cheaper to produce than records ever where. But, when the CD hit the market they hiked the price. Forced us to buy CD's (which have a lower sound quality...due to the low and high tones being cut off) and CD players...all to fund their profits.

A record in Holland in 1988 cost 24.99 guildens (that's roughly 12.50$), in 1989 the average CD was selling at 35 guildens. That's a hell of a lot of more money.

So, don't feel guilt when you're downloading anything you want. They screwed you over for years!

Now, the internet has come back to bite the record companies in the arse! MP3's have lower sound quality than CD's (because even more high and low frequency is cut from it, to make the files smaller) and it is a hassle to try to get every song you want. BUT it is preferable to spending 14.99 euros to buy it. And considering you probably won't like half the songs anyway...
If CD's were sold at 5 or 6 euros a CD (which is still plenty of profit for all concerned, by the way), then nobody would resort to troublesome downloading.

Metallica (and the dude said it best in The big Lebowski: "Bunch of assholes" ) generally positioned themselves as rebels and such. Then when their profits were cut due to their own greed they started whining like little children.

To paraphrase Yoda: "Revealed their true intentions are!"

Not only are they greedy bastards, their music is crap too. And not only that they're stabbing people like Tom Petty (who's been battling the power and wealth of the record companies since the 70's) in the back.

I pray, each and every day, that they crawl back to re-re-revisit their garage and never come out to trouble us again.

Sorry, but I have to disagree there. I've been listening to Metallica for 15 years now, and if you ask me a couple of their recent albums (I'm thinking of S&M and St Anger in particular) have been distinctly stale, IMHO...

I was bitterly disappointed when I first listened to St Anger. James Hetfield's vocal style just seems to get more and more dessicated the older he gets, Lars Ulrich just seems to want to hit everything within reach as fast and as hard as he can, and Kirk Hammett only seems interested in speedwork anymore. And don't get me started on that berk they got in to replace Jason Newstead on bass...

No, I reckon Metallica reached their peak, musically at least, with Master of Puppets. That seems to be the last time they really sat down and composed anything, the last time they sounded like they were more interested in the range and depth of their music than single sales.

Like I said, just IMHO.
