If I have 50 short chapters saved in 50 separate documents, is there some
sort of function to compile them into a single document without copy/pasting
50 times?

I'm running 'Office 12' according to the properties on Vista, if this makes a
difference.

In word, go to the help function and search for this:

Combine or split subdocuments

I've never used the feature, but you can perhaps read and figure out if this is what you need.
