In lieu of paying $150cd for the microsoft version of excel I downloaded Open Office 1.5 which is a legit software for excel spreadsheets. My problem is ,it won't let me write on the spreadsheet ,it tells me it is in the read only mode.
This program works on a friends computer no problem ,and he can fill the spreadsheet no problem .Any ideas why my computer will not let me?
One other quirky thing ,if I use netscape as my browser It will let me write on the spreadsheet but I cannot access the drop down windows available on the spreadsheet. With IE it won't let me do anything but read! Thanks , from the computer illiterate,Mike

You can't do a "Save As" on the spreadsheet and save a copy locally on your machine?

It might be that the file you are trying to save already exists with the read only attribute set.

Try "Save As" with a different file name.

If that works then check within windows explorer to see if a file exists with the original file name. If it does then you can now delete it and rename the file you have just saved to the file name that you originally wanted.

Here is what happens-I click on the sites-Download our order form which are in the form of Excel spreadsheets(this is what it says)-and it gives me no choices it simply puts up the spreadsheet order form and when I try to fill it in a box appears that says- Open Office org 1.1.5
Document opened in read-only mode

When using the same Open Office software at a friends computer when you click on the above -Download our order.....etc-a window appears asking how you want to open it,choose the default and the spreadsheet opens and can be written on.
I can't help but think that I have done /changed some setting in my computer that is not allowing it to open properly?
Sorry if I'm not making myself clear 😕

I didn't quite understand what you wrote but as both lausey and I have suggested:

1.Open the file.
2.From the File Menu, there should be a "Save As" selection if it is similiar to Excel.
3.Rename the file something different and save it somewhere on your computer.
4.Then you should have complete control over it.

Glad we could help 🙂 Please don't ask me about sophisticated functions and what not. That is where I am lacking.

You might think about updating to OpenOffice.Org 2.0. Lots of improvements. Haven't used the spreadsheet yet, just word processor and it is a lot nicer.
