Well, in case you woke up this morning thinking you'd seen and heard everything, here's something new for you.

Angola is holding the first annual (which means it may or may not take-off, I presume) Miss landmine Angola 2008 contest.

http://www.miss-landmine.org/misslandmine_candidates.html

Amongst the candidates are:

Miss Benguela who sells tomatoes whenever she can get hold of them and
Miss Huila who will do whatever she gets...
My favourite is obviously Miss Huambo who is 15, single, mother of three and who's favourite colour is orange!

And what is the main prize? A free prosthetic limb!

I kid you not.

True or not, it's pretty sad that the cash spent on enough dresses to support one beauty pageant for little girls, pouting their clown faces and barbie hair in front of a panel of judges, would probably be enough to make a difference to these women. Imagine how many dollars go into the Miss Universe ordeal.

I don't see what's supposed to be funny or what the problem is.

You don't?

Maybe a "Miss genital warts" competition or a "Little Miss car-crash accident 2008" tickles you more?

Are you stupid? This is about a real and horrid plight and about bringing light to the vacuity and waste of beauty pageants.

The symbolism of it all seems to be lost on you. It's actually a sad reflection of the problem.

Me neither. 😕 I guess I just have a lousy sense of humour.

"Another strong but contrasting impression was attending a beauty pageant that the street kids in the back alley behind my ex-father-in-law’s house had put together on New Year’s Eve. It struck me as being so different from all the sleaze and the commercialism and the sexism that we, in our western culture, associate with those kinds of pageants."

This is what the guy who had the idea for this ha to say about the project.
