800 people were holding signs and shaking their fists at some buildings in Toronto this weekend. Looking at this group of people, I stared at the building for a long time wondering just what it was that the building had done to anger these people. This building had been there for many many years and had never done anything that I was aware of. It mostly just sat there, motionless. I decided to ask one of the fist wavers what the building had done to deserve the insults being hurled its way....

Me: "why are you hurling foul language insults at this building. There are some young children across the street you know."

Protester: "Because I'm mad at Israel"

Me: "Yes I can see that from your sign, but why are you yelling at a building?"

"Protester" This building is the Israel consulate.

Me: "Oh, so when the Israel bombs Palestine, to show your displeasure you come here and berate this building?

Protester: "Absolutely, I have to do something about it!"

Me: "Do you think anyone in Israel cares that some people in Toronto are shaking their fists at a building?"

Protester: "uh what do you mean"

Me: "Do you actually think any of this makes any difference? I mean, when you are done swearing at this building, you will go home. Now, YOU may feel better because you think you've done something but in reality all you did was hold a sign while walking in circles. This whole thing just seems designed to make you think you are doing something when in fact you aren't really doing anything. Nothing you've done here today makes any difference."

Protester: .......Zionist!

I suppose then that you're also one of those heretics 😉 (which would make only two of us that I know of) who thinks that putting a bumper sticker on your car proclaiming support of "our troops" in reality only supports whoever is making money off the bumper sticker. No one in Iraq or Afghanistan (or Germany, Japan, or anywhere else overseas) can actually see the bumpers of the cars in my town and get a warm fuzzy feeling because of it.

How about "save the whale" bumper stickers - in English - on a big SUV?

Who are they kidding?

Perhaps, like me, they use bio-diesel. There's a LOT of oil in one whale you know, and the less of them we eat, the more kilometers I can drive my truck in an environmentally sensitive way.

Isn't bio-diesel responsible for huge deforestation in the developing world?

Doesn't cutting down on consumption (ie: not using a SUV unless necessary) the only way to go.

Not really. Cheap coffee, cheap hardwoods, cheap cocaine, cheap fruits etc have far more of an impact on deforestation than bio-diesel ever does. In North America we are now using the corn that would normally go to feed starving people in developing countries and converting that to fuel (using huge amounts of oil in the process) so we can assure ourselves we are "saving the planet."

I'm lucky enough that my truck is big enough to carry an SUV around in. I get pretty good gas mileage that way.

I think a pretty good solution would be to simply start whale farms and feed them the corn we are currently converting to fuel. Whales are far more efficient at this task than our current technology. And the whale oil, when added to diesel, gives off a rather pleasant odor. I believe its also higher quality than ethanol, so in the end its a better fuel.
