This morning i was in the local shopping centre with a friend of a friend. He had stayed at the house that night, and we went there together for our various reasons.
I said i was going into the book shop/newsagent to get a mothers day card. . .He said he didnt believe in buying them!!!

Is it just me or is that a sad state of affairs?
Imagine not getting your mother a card, we were in the shop aswell, so he had no excuse other that "its just for card makers to get money, they don't have a Ben day" (Ben being his name).

What a bad show 🙁

Do you know your friend's mother? Maybe she thinks those cards are crap, too? And maybe your friend does something else for his mother which has a lot more meaning? If his mother thinks that Mother's Day is important and if not getting a card from her son would hurt her, then I agree that he should buy one. I have never done so, because I know my mother hates the whole concept because she has grown up in Nazi Germany, and the nazis abused it for their own purposes.

Edit: Replace "friend" with "friend of a friend".

Depends on your mother, too. If you live where they only sell schmaltzy cards, and the cards are an outright lie in the case of your own family, then you need some sort of Plan B.

Don't disgard this argument for being the only one. There is a lot of truth in this argument, I honestly feel the same way.

It is all about consuming; buying products, disgarding products and buying 'improved' products again, over and over, each and every time. This card thing is no different. Why would 'they' unleash a lot of adds if the post offices, the flower shops, flower growers and the cars manufactures are not making any money?

Who do you think is paying for all those adds? They sure aren't doing this because they like all mothers in the world. They do this to get money because mothers are a good subject to get people into buying flowers and cards and such. You only hear of them around mothers day or christmas or such days. Sure they are not spending their money on any other day to make people being nice and attentative to another if there is not a social impulse they could take advantage (the magic word!) off.

I make her breakfast in bed.

Putting in effort rather than spending money seems to generate a better reception,

You failed to ask your friend what he was going to do for his mother on Mother's Day?

Maybe he's taking her out for a nice dinner, or spending quality time with her and doing some small repairs around her house. Those things are much more important than a card.

Jebus.

One day out of the year is too much to ask that you give your mother a nice card and some flowers, candy, little stuffed animal, whatever?
Because people will make money off of it?

When your mother is no longer here on this planet, you're all going to feel like a buncha real heels.

I don't see why I should feel bad about not giving my mother a card on a day she doesn't especially care for. There are a lot of nice things you can do for your mother, it doesn't have to be a card on Mother's Day.

Each year I build a monument of ever increasing proportions for my mother. These monuments is made out of pure stone, so the effort to build it is immense. They signify my mother's ever increasing value to me, and our ever strengthening bond.
