I want to get a cheap setup ot make my recordings better. i was thinking about maybe a mike and stand, a pickup, and some kind of mixer i can plug straight into my PC.....and it needs to be cheap enough i wont get beaten to death with my own guitar by my other half (although a decent mid range set up is ok). The idea is to record on my camera, then take the sound out and marry the properly recorded sound to the video (that can be done, right?)

Anyone know where i can look for pointers, or suggest a decent setup?

My mate's daughter found a Canon IXUS 40 Digital camera on a wall and he kept it. Not very honest I know, but that's his outlook. Anyway it has a camcorder facility on it and this produces excellent results, sound quality wise. It doesn't have great picture quality in VGA mode but if all you want it for is Youtube clips and saving your progress on your PC then it won't fair too bad at all.

If you want to go for something more advanced, best ask Sonhouse and his dudes. Some other entrants in the past music competitionms that we had here are well clued up on this sort of thing.

EDIT: Example of Canon IXUS 40 quality

A sound card aimed at music recording might be a step in the right direction. As for a guitar pickup, then Fishman are a good make to consider. A bit pricey, but worth it. You can pick up a half decent Shure mic without breaking the bank eg SM58. Then you have to consider what recording software you are going to use. I use a cracked version of Cubase. Shhh don't tell anyone.

Wow. Neat little bit of kit. Why **** around when you can get a 4 track recorder with stereo mics all in one box. Be interesting to see what results you get with it. Can you link it up to a PC to dump your files?

Edit: Just noticed it has USB 2.0 capabilities.

Well yeas. If it works fine as it is, no need to splash out any more. I can't see them being crapola mics on it. I didn't even know you could link external mics to it. I thought you wanted to integrate video into the recording as well though. How you going to go about that?

You can unplug the two mics, and get 4 tracks down from seperate inputs, two mics and two instruments. There's also a whole whack of pedal effects thrown in there too....and a metronome haha.

I was thinking about recording video and then trying ot marry up the vid with the sound, or just adding the sound to some other video altogether....not sure yet.

Aye. There must be some third party software you can get for mixing MP3's and movie files somewhere on the internet. Maybe Major Geeks offer something.
