What songs, artists or bands did you love in your younger days that your parents hated?

My father was a strict religious guy and only Christian music was allowed in my house, with some rare exceptions where he'd listen to secular artists. So pretty much anything good was banned.

The one big exception was Michael Jackson, which he allowed mainly because my mom liked his music. When I was around 8 yrs old, we happened to get a tape with a collection of his videos and it was the most surreal, bewildering experience to actually have such music playing in my house. That came to an end when my father angrily declared that MJ was gay.

Were there any artists or songs that your parents wouldn't allow you to listen to or disapproved of?

I was not forbidden to listen to anything, but I was expected to listen in the far back of the house with the door closed, to Frank Zappa, Hawkwind, Black Sabbath. My mom liked Fleetwood Mac though.

My parents did not pay attention to my avid interest in music and there was rarely any playing in communal parts of the house.

Wow, I'm sorry you had that experience.

My parents were rock and rollers from way back, so I heard rock in my house for as long as I can remember. Even a little country, a touch of classical and some blues and jazz crept in, so I wasn't as deprived as you.

(But I was as white as the driven snow, so I never heard rap or hip hop until I was grown.)

Ah yes, I was quite keen on original FM with Peter Green.

I continued to follow them into Bob Welch and ultimately Lindsey Buckingham stages.

Mom liked the later melodic stuff with Christine McVie and Stevie Nicks.

⬆️ exactly the same as my childhood where music is concerned.

When i would play Metal they would make a 🤨 face but they didn't tell me to turn it off.

I think it had more to do with me growing up in NYC. White kids also listened to rap. If I grew up in Tennessee I'd probably be more into country.

But I listen to pretty much all genres of music, so I'm sure I'd still like rap.

I know.

We were well-off, too, so I had the whole "princess" thing going on -- only child and everything.

I got cured of that eventually, but my childhood was rather privileged. Not exactly proud of it, it's just the way it was.

And yet you still became a suicidal abductee cat lady who was saved by angels and went on to be a kung-fu vigilante kicking ass and saving lives.

None, really.

At one time, I liked (and this is dating me) both Queen's Bicycle Race and Village People's YMCA, and my father went and looked for the albums and went "Yeah, no, you really don't realise yet what they're talking about - we're not doing this." And at my age back then, he was right. Later on, I did go on to be a Queen fan - in fact, I now have Jazz on vinyl - and realise Village People were both rather naff and trying too hard. So, he turned out to be correct.

Also, he infected me with a love for Bach. Which has never faded, and I don't think ever will.
