My personal tastes sort of run the proverbial gamut of styles. Though I'm partial to metal and progessive rock, I have an extensive collection of music, mostly reflecting my taste for rhytmically/harmonically complex stuff. Here is a smattering of my particular interests.
Classical:
Stravinsky: Le Sacre du Printemps is perhaps the greatest thing ever written.
Holst: The Planets
Bach: The Bandenburg Concertos
Chopin: ANYTHING...the greatest pianist to ever live. Yes, even eclipsing Rachmaninov.
Mozart: The Requiem Mass, Piano Concerto #23, Symphony #40
Beethoven: The 6th and the 9th. Duh.
Frank Zappa: The Yellow Shark
Mendelssohn: A Midsummer's Night Dream
Mahler: The 4th and 9th
Bartok: Rhapsodies Nos. 1 and 2 / Piano Quintet
Progressive Rock:
Rush (My favorite rock band by far)
Frank Zappa
King Crimson (Is it rock? Jazz? Metal? Prog? KC is the ONLY band that originated in the late 60s/early 70s that still writes original, groundbreaking music).
Yes (1973-1980; 1994; 2001)
Dream Theater (virtuoso musicianship at its pinnacle; some people call them a metal band, but I disagree)
Queensryche (1984-1994)
Transatlantic
Porcupine Tree (These guys could be HUGE if radio program directors weren't whores)
Nightingale
Moontower
Enchant
Spock's Beard
Emerson Lake and Palmer (1972-1979)
Metal (I'm omitting the classic stuff like Iron Maiden and Testament and Death):
Opeth (though I hesitate to classify them in this category, much like Dream Theater above).
Nevermore
Nightwish
Lacuna Coil
Sinergy
Soilwork
In Flames
Evergrey
Edge of Sanity
Avant-Garde:
Frank Zappa
Devin Townsend
Mr. Bungle
Fantomas
Meshuggah
Spiral Architect
Cynic
Gordion Knot
Ephel Duath
Praxis
Tool
Jazz Fusion:
Frank Zappa
Weather Report
Mahavishnu Orchestra
Shawn Lane (another genius who died well before his time)
Bela Fleck
Miles Davis
Jon Scofield
Allan Holdsworth
Bill Frisell
That's just a little slice. I can't believe the stuff I'm leaving out (Joe Satriani, Planet X, Dvorak, Genesis (1971-1983), Brahms, John Coltrane, Steve Vai, Tori Amos, Dave Brubeck, the list goes on and on).
Heh. I also just noticed that I put Frank Zappa in almost every category. Deservedly so, I think.
Originally posted by player42I thought you said 'Presto' was your favorite Rush album. 😀
Phish: Billy Breathes
Streely Dan: Everything Must Go
Rusted Root: Remember
Dave Matthews: Some Devil
Simon & Garfunkel: Bookends
Rush: Power Windows
The String Cheese Incident: Born on the Wrong Planet
Jamming to "Permanent Waves" as I type this.
Originally posted by Poison GodmachineAgreed: Chopin > Rachmaninov + Liszt. Other than the ''Polonaise Militaire'', which is just ridiculous-sounding, I respect his work a lot. He probably had the best understanding of harmony ever, as is evident in the Nocturnes, where he seems to have anticipated several things jazz musicians did harmonically. Also, those randomly appearing chains of dominant sevenths all over his music are really cool.

Not so sure about Stravinsky though 😕.

This thread is OK. Other threads have been dominated by people who are posting about how much they like cheesy pop like:
Nirvana
Aerosmith
The Bee Gees
George Michael
M.C. Hammer
Vanilla Ice
And even (God help us) Michael Jackson.
Disclaimer: I have nothing personally against the people who like this crap. I just think it's crap.
