My son turned 6 in July. I started teaching him chess about a year ago. We play every now and then (maybe 5-10 games a month, usually 2 or 3 at a time) I try to show him some ideas but he is very independant and sometimes gets angry at me when I try. So I learned to just play him and set up learning opportunities through the couse of our games. Now I can't judge how good a 6 y/o should be. I assumed that if he were good, I would notice.
Last week he played his 2 cousins (ages 9 and 11) who are in chess clubs and are good for their age. He was up a rook in the end game before losing to the 9 year old, and he BEAT the 11 year old!!
Then today, my wife tells me that he beat another older player today at school. (Jake didn't know how old...it was in the after hours program w/ mixed kids.)
Maybe he'll be able to teach me a thing or two in a few years! I look forward to it. What a blast.

keep him away from this site please, i have a fragile ego ๐.
All of you with young learners could get them involved with online games here at RHP.
Maybe a seperate area could be set up to allow children of members to get started in chess. They could have a unique icon by their username so the rest of us know who they are, and they could play each other. Parents could help them get games set up, then turn them loose.
If you get enough of them involved, they would always have a nice place to visit, and find someone to play.
Is this possibly a new dimension for RHP??
Just a thought!
regards, Marc
Originally posted by fexkornI think it's awesome to get kids involved in chess. My 1yr old daughter will have opportunities to play chess with me although I won't pressure her if she has no interest in the game. I think a site that is for kids would be a cool idea but I don't know how much support there would be. (I'll be there when she is old enough).
I think that's a great idea, Andrew. I don't know if kids would like correspondence chess. They probably would prefer live chess, but I think it's worth a look. In any case, I could bring him in to start some games against people I trust just to see if he likes it.
My ad hoc Chess club has received permission from a local mall and every Saturday at 2pm we go and play at the mall. We have had a great response from kids and are getting some interested in playing and learning more. We even have teenagers playing us and getting lessons. I think the youth of today would do well to get involved in something as wonderful as Chess. Anything I can do to help you guys just let me know!!

Originally posted by T1000Thanks 'T'! Just think of all of the support we could build if other people did the same thing! It's easy to do. Last weekend I was the only one that could make it and all I did was set up the board and sit there reading a chess book. I'd look around a lot to make eye contact with people checking me out and people get curious and ask what's going on or if they can play. I played 3 kids and they said they would be back this weekend.

I can't take all of the credit though. Someone else in our group came up with the idea. ๐
i played a 6 year old girl 3 years ago and she beat me silly. it started out as just a game, then i tried best of three.. best of 5..๐ณ

ps i even added time to the clocks sothat i could think about my moves (alot) more. (needless to say she just found quicker ways to kill me)
