the symptons are that:

when i try to access it the message is:
"E:/is not accessible.
The device is not ready".

i can use my mouse to click on the eject option from "my computer" to successfully eject the cd.

is it a driver problem? or a hardware problem? what else can i try?

ms-windows? see if the troubleshooting hardware wizard can tell you anything.

installed new software just prior to the start of the failures?

try taking the case off and wiggling the connectors in back of the drive.

get a new drive, around $20-30. first try swapping a drive from another box, see if it works.

i have a second drive - i tried putting that in ... i tried wiggling.

when i go into controlpanel/system/cdrom ... it says thast there is no driver and that a driver is not required - surely this is not correct?
i tried updating the driver but it says it is happy as is.

in device manager ... where for my monitor and mouse etc it gives quite specific details of each device ... for my cd-drive it just says "(CD-ROM Drive)" - literally with the brackets
😕

didya try wiggling the other end of the ribbon cable, the end at the controller?

try plugging the power cable to a different connector.

had everything powered off when you swapped drives?

does the second drive work in another computer?

driver is not required: could be a newer O/S. or an older one.

1.
Go into BIOS and select first boot device as CD. Then try booting from a bootable CD (eg Windows CD). If the CD boots at least you know it isn't a hardware problem.

2.
Is this problem when your trying to play music CDs? If so, before inserting the CD press and hold down the left SHIFT key. Keep down for about 10 seconds after it is inserted. Then go to explorer and see if you can see the tracks. If you can you should then be able to play them. If this is the case then one of your music CDs has (and without you knowing) inserted a bit of very annoying software in the name of copy protection. Look for a file called install.log

Stop using it as a coffee mug holder.

Have you tried sticking a fork into the little slot thingie ? Spectacular things happen to toasters when you do that . Did you try rinsing it out ? Maybe there's dirt in it . Set it in the yard and use the hose on it , or soak it in the tub .

I have the same problem with my 2nd hard drive. The computer sees the drive but says it is not accessible! But this is different than your problem cause a spyware program wrote itself to my 2nd drive and I used a utility to blow it away. Now I have to do a low level format on it to get it to work again.

I also had a similar problem with a cd drive once. THAT problem was caused by a cd writing program. It went into the system somewhere's and locked the drive while burning a cd, but then the program locked up the computer! When I rebooted I couldn't access the cd anymore cause it was locked by the software. Had a terrible time fixing it. Seems to me that I ended up reinstalling Windows! 😳

To fix your problem you will need a large haddock, two eggo waffles, a skill saw, steam iron, a spatula, a beach ball and a VHS tape of "When Harry Met Sally". Once you have acquired these items I'll fill you in on the next steps you will need to take.

I drank the scotch already. 18yr old Glenlivet could have been overkill, but, you can't take any chances with a situation like this.

A low level format is much easier.
