A low-level format is almost never necessary. And it will likely void your warranty, if exists. From what I gather, you have tried both cds, and have a (2nd drive) hdd problem? ask yourself these- when did it last work properly? what changed? make sure your jumpers are right, make sure the cables are good, verify that the BIOS settings are correct for your config, do a full virus and spyware scan, run all your windows updates, create lots of restore points along the way.

Apparently you didn't read my original post. I explained why it is necessary. I'm a computer guru. I know what is needed and what isn't.

I always thought it was against the spirit of guruism to refer to oneself as a guru.

I may be wrong.

My experience has been that those claiming to be a guru seldom are. Case in point; You managed to get a bug bad enough for a low-level format.

But anyway. Wasn't trying to step on your blue suede. I'm not really keeping close track of who said what. Just offering options and opinions.

Meanwhile, I've never had a virus/spyware I couldn't clean manually, if the scanners failed. I clean thousands of them from customer's computers every week.

Maybe you can share with us the virus name which you downloaded that requires a low-level format? Figure you've at least identified it.

Maybe I'm missing something.
