If you have an older, slower comp running windows, get rid of windows and install Linux. It will run more smoothly, with fewer restarts (if any, haven't restarted my comp in a month). And it's free, as in free beer!

Free, yes the operating system and many applications are free.

What isn't free? The massive amounts of time needed to switch over anc configure Linux, You either have to replace all your existing applications OR spend LOTS of time trying to get the OLD ones to run through WINE or some other emulater/not an emulator.

Do you honestly think that somebody with computer problems is going to magically have them disappear with Linux? If they are already having computer problems, then most likely they aren't adept enough to run Linux in the first place.

Yes I've run Linux, (I first installed in in 95), and I've worked as a UNIX admin for a handful of companies. Linux is not the answer to "computer problems" It has its place, but not among the "common-folk"

It took me as long to install and configure Red Hat Linux 9.0 as it did to configure a faster, better comp with Windows XP. When was the last time you used Linux. Most GUI's for Linux today are easier to use (I have my 72 year old computer illiterate mother using it) than Windows. The only thing that is difficult is running windows applications through something like Winex/Sedega, but other than games, I have found native applications that equal or surpass my Windows versions. Running a P3/667 with a 64mb vid card I can run Unreal Tournament 2004 fine (which has a Linux installer), on a windows machine it would lag something terribly. A stable computing environment makes for an enjoyable computing experience. No random crashes, no constant restarting or freezing up, why would you steer someone away from that. Because it didn't work for you doesn't mean that it can't for someone else.
If you look way back in your rear view mirror, you may see the Open Source community gaining on you. Way, way back in your rear view.

Well, that comment might be a little out of place.

I have had my code used in handful of collaborative open source projects. As well as released a fair number of non-collaborative open-source projects on my own. Just because I don't recommend Linux for the masses, doesn't mean I don't understand the power/advantage of open-source.

Of course I release mine under a BSD-style license, NOT GPL....but we don't need to go into that debate here....

Last time I ran linux? about 2 years ago now....I really doubt it has come as far as it NEEDS to come before I recommend it. The biggest downside I would say is the applications, getting them to run or replacing them is NOT easy.
