Handed in the worksheet for unit one tonight. It'll be a laugh to see how i did. I tried to answer all the tasks without looking at my notes, but i ws told that was a stupid thing to do ( my first attempt was pretty lame).
I might post the response, if it is not too revealing.
This is a totally online course. It is my dry run, if you will. If i pass, i will progress to a part online, with a weekend exam with professors after. . .then go for the CELTA course. I should have a fair grasp of the subject by then haha.
Hi xxxxxx ,
I was very impressed while reading through your unit 1 answers, all of which were pertinent and interesting.
I would however like to add a few comments to task 4 (adult and young learners). While it is true that younger learners usually start a course with little motivation, the same can also be true of adults. They are sometimes not there through their own choice but can be compelled to attend by their employer etc. Adults also can lose motivation rather more quickly than younger learners, especially if thy feel that they are not making as much progress as they would like. Unfortunately, they can at times set themselves quite unrealistic targets. External pressures such as workload, family and financial issues can also have some affect on an adult learner's motivation level.
One of the greatest challenges facing a teacher of young learners is that of motivation. Most young learners haven't made an active choice to study a language and would rather be doing something else with their free time. Why? Because they see learning as a rather dull and boring activity (which it often can be in their school system) and playing computer games/sports, watching TV etc as more enjoyable. As teachers we have to try and overcome these issues. If we can make our classes as much fun as any other activity they do, then they will want to come to class. Also by helping students feel a part of the school/class and helping them build up friendships with other class members, this can all help stimulate that interest.
A motivated student is usually a good and successful student and whether they are adults or children, this is a very important issue.
Anyway, well done on the first unit. Very complete and correct answers.
Please bear in mind that I don't usually work at the weekend, so if you send anything from late Friday to Sunday, it probably won't be answered until the Monday. Thanks for your patience! Keep up the good work! Units 2 and 3 attached. Regards,
