I went to work in NJ like I do, gone for a week and I come back, the kids have been on the comp going to god only knows what sites and now the router is going nuts, there is something either coming or going as fast as it can. Anyone know some kind of monitor prog that can see what the heck is going in and out the router?
The comp is going slower too, so there must be some kind of virus but not sure how to proceed.

Do you have a firewall installed?

You do have Anti-Virus stuff installed too, don't you?

Anyway, you could do an online virus/spyware scan first.

Somewhere like:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
or
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/ActiveScan.htm

And maybe clean out all the crap with
http://www.ccleaner.com/

I suggest the first thing you should do is to unplug the router and get off line and secure your computer first. You can do that with a good fire wall and then do a virus check with AVG It is a free program hopefully you already have. Also do a few spyware removal. No one program will get it all. A variety is best. I use Spybot search and destroy and Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE personal. along with spyware blaster. All free downloads and very good. It will keep you going as long as you do the required updates regularly. I suggest with heavy usage twice a week.

What do you have against www. crapcleaner it is free and basically just removes your temp files and stuff all in a couple clicks it isn't a virus or spyware removal tool. It's fast and very helpful. IMO.

it isn't a virus or spyware removal tool.

Correct. But if you go there and then finish, do a scan on it.
You shall find 10 tracking cookies attached! So no spyware removal as you said, just an introducer!...

Why use an internet freebie for security?.... the potential costs are enormous to your personal usage.

Nothing, of value, on the internet is free!

If this is true then scan the tracking cookies and get rid of them. Problem solved. Believe it or not there are still some useful things in life that are still free.

RHP is free to use, is there not some value to a non subscriber?

I don't need to scan them , it is automatically removed ; just highlighted to me.

Yes, most things of value in life are free. Of value, of course.

RHP is also of value, of course we wouldn't be here otherwise.

We subbed because we know the standard cannot be maintained free!

That is of value! 🙂

Btw, you get tracking cookies almost anywhere you go on the net - including this site. They are 99% of the time harmless.

I know. I'm just on one! Bad day!

But in China there are many cookies which lay paths for trojans on a regular basis! Pain in the butt! 🙁

I scanned with the free version of AVG and all it came up with was a bunch of cookies. big deal. no effect on the uploads. I also ran Trojan
hunter and it found one spyware adware somthing that had no effect when it killed it. I am even having trouble typing because so much cpu is being used. According to my service provider it has been uploading at the rate of 300K per second for two days solid 24-7.
Gigabytes uploading and I wasn't even on the net att. I don't think this kind of thing is going to be picked up by Ad aware or spybot, this is pretty intense. The only way to stop the upload is to pull the 45 connection so I may do that after I get some scans online like they said. This sucks BIGTIME.

Ok, i am no techie so you have no reason to believe what i say . .but here it is . . . . your computer . worst case .. has been turned into a "zombie" . . . (a very likely possibility from what you describe) . . that is, . . you are sending out constant spam messages to everyone on your email list as well as anyone else that it can think to send to . and may be doing a lot of wasted time tasks just to torture you.

The solution?

There is no good "easy" solution. All of the advice you are getting won't clean a clever program that is running your machine.

There is one very certain solution that is a major pain. You can copy your documents to a thumb drive or a CD and then reinstall your system. That will fix anything going on in your machine. the price you pay is the time it takes to do it, but it isn't hard to do if you kept your original operating disks.

Now for some prophylaxis: 1. make sure you put in firewalls and virus protection before you go online with the reinstall. 2. educate those teenagers about the dangers of downloading real cool freebies from strangers.

If i have this all wrong . .and i probably do . .then let us know how someone else helped you.

Good luck!
