I'm trialling AVG 8 and the AVG toolbar. The thing literally "eats" memory but is not a bad "toy" if your computer is not an old one.

I haven't played with the new Norton as they do 15 day trials - too short for me to bother. At least the new AVG 8 offers a 30 day trial.

Babe in the woods, only ten months into laptop cyberspace. Does NOD 32 get the job done?

I hear NOD32 is one of the best if not the best as it is lightweight on resources.

Nod 32 is regarded by many [who know about these things] to be the best available 'paid for' AntiVirus program.

Personally, I manage ok with AVG free and the other usual free stuff.

That's AVG 7 presumably. AVG 8 is probably meant for a 12 cylinder rally car not a computer. Looking at the AVGFree forums some users started a thread that was locked about popups from campaign.grisoft.com urging them to upgrade to AVG 8.

When I get the daily definition updates for AVG [free VER 7.5] there's one small recommendation-to-upgrade-box - no sweat, one click and it's gone. I assume that could be what they are talking about.

edit:
Isn't AVG 8 still being Beta tested?

AVG 8 is now fully launched but be warned it is resource intensive and installs some ugly toolbar thing that purports to scan sites but didn't in my view. The toolbar is just a way for Grisoft to make money from Yahoo searches replacing Google search.

Why would anyone want to use Yahoo to search?

Why would a previously reputable company like Grisoft (now called AVG Technologies) now start using popups and then install a "security" toolbar with Yahoo search. kaching - so that they can make some quick bucks.

I did not bother to read the terms and conditions/privacy terms etc but what goes on with the toolbar and data submitted through it? Is this different from Alexa?

How would you rate AVAST (as one of the freebies)?

AVG has dropped the ball a few times on a colleagues machine, so I tried AVAST with the infected beast and it got all of them.

What do you think Dr.?

Maybe their paid-for and enterprise products can't support them anymore?
Contrary to popular belief - developers aren't paid in caffeine..

I read a review a while ago that rated avast! and I believe AntiVir, better than AVG.

At the end of the day, nothing beats responsible PC and Internet usage, so they will all give you decent protection, but no matter how 'good' the product, there are always ways to bypass them. Especially on Windows machines.
