What I'm afraid of is that they'll rebuild New Orleans right back in place, until the next category 5 hurricane wipes it out again. I say, if a building in New Orleans is reasonably repairable, repair it and use it. If it's a total loss, get rid of the debris and rebuild elsewhere. There's absolutely no reason to create this H20-of-Damocles situation all over again.

A problem now is that downtown the buildings are very old and were not built with Hurricanes/flooding in mind.

It flooded out , then burned to the water line . Hope they get a chance to think about rebuilding the Big EZ before something like that makes it moot .

Originally posted by johnnybikeI'm not sure that figure is accurate for several reasons. In this situation, the military is the charity. They are doing the rescuing, flying in meals and water, and busing people to wear they need to be in addition to providing security. Secondly, much of the charity that is coming in is from private and faith based organizations and it is almost impossible to tabulate that amount.
Are you taking about overall giving or per capita?
The USA gives a large proportion of its foreign aid to Pakistan, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan where they have reasons other than charity to be involved.
Reading an array of newspapers discussing Katrina everyone of them mentioned the Kyoto agreement. Why do you think that might be?
Why is the USA try ...[text shortened]...
Why does the USA spend 0.03 cents per $100 on charity and $5.00 / $100 on military spending.

We (the U.S.), has no obligation to do ANYTHING. What we have in wealth was, is, and will be due to the individual freedoms to be the best we can be. If we get lazy, we lose that status. Sorry, thats the way lifes been since Adam bit the apple. How much have you contributed to the relief effort? How about last year, when Florida was flattend 3 times? My home town was flooded out 2 years in a row in West Virginia a few years back. NO AID SHOWED UP FROM ANY OTHER COUNTRY! Imagine that. Why? My point, alot of well meaning people from other countries are constantly abusive to Americans, when frankly they have no right whatsoever to be critical.
As for the military, do you know why a country needs a strong military? So they never have to use it. I don't recall many protest over the U.S. military in the U.K. when the Soviet threat was there. You NEVER negotiate peace of any kind from a weak position. Chamberlain at Munich should have taught you that.
I have never argued that this countries government is perfect, there are MANY things they do which I absolutly leave off scratching my head at the absurdity. But I am tired of the "Sorry - assed Americans" attitude.
Off my soap box......

A bit on the news tonight about a black woman who was really ill and sees a police car, goes over to it crying and asking for help, white policeman points a shotgun in her face and tells her to clear off.
I've noticed in the news reports they always interview black people and there are nearly always white people in the background. Then they go on about it being the black people left behind, but white people are obviously there so it seems like media spin to me.
