one article mentioned that toyota keeps ONE brake data analyzer in the US under strict control which they use on a case-by-case basis, as opposed to the other companies which are more open with their data. this indicates to me that they knew they had a problem, and covered it up. it might even be in the software. more time will tell if their mechanical fixes will solve it.

I'm not saying that they didn't know, but rather that this piece of 'evidence' is completely circumstantial and tells you nothing about their knowledge. You need hard evidence before claiming things like this.
